About and missions

Inaugurated as part of the Mohammed VI University Hospital Center in Oujda, the Mental Health and Psychiatric Hospital stands as the premier tertiary public mental health facility serving the entire Oriental region. Designed according to contemporary architectural and clinical standards, the hospital features luminous, secure, and humanized therapeutic spaces that depart from legacy institutional designs, prioritizing patient dignity, safety, and psychological recovery.

The hospital manages a full spectrum of adult psychiatric conditions: acute psychotic decompensation, schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorders, severe treatment-resistant depression with crisis risk, and debilitating anxiety states. Featuring a 24/7 dedicated psychiatric emergency service, sectorized inpatient wards (male and female), and an active day hospital, the facility also operates a hospital addiction medicine unit and consultation-liaison psychiatry. Affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Oujda, it spearheads specialized residency training and clinical psychiatric research across Eastern Morocco.

Humanized Clinical Architecture and Day Hospital Rehabilitation

The architectural framework of the Oujda Mental Health Hospital prioritizes natural daylight, secure open courtyards, and communal spaces fostering emotional de-escalation. The day hospital serves as a pivotal bridge: stabilized patients attend daytime sessions featuring expressive arts, occupational therapy, physical conditioning, and cognitive retraining. This gradual step-down transition from inpatient care back into domestic life reduces readmission rates and consolidates functional independence.

Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and Holistic Somatic Care Integration

Complex somatic illnesses (oncological pathologies, chronic renal failure, severe trauma) frequently provoke major psychiatric complications, including acute adjustment disorders, reactive depression, and treatment refusal. The consultation-liaison psychiatric team deploys directly to bedside consultations across all CHU hospital wards. This swift clinical support alleviates acute distress, guides medical teams, and significantly enhances patient adherence to demanding therapeutic regimens.
