About and missions

Founded by prominent academic psychiatrists and clinical practitioners, the Moroccan Association of Addictology (AMA) serves as Morocco's premier scientific body dedicated to prevention, clinical management, and academic research in addictive disorders. The association coordinates physicians, clinical psychologists, and specialized nurses practicing in public and private addiction centers, psychiatric departments, and university hospital centers across Morocco.

AMA provides pivotal advisory expertise to the Ministry of Health and public authorities in drafting and refining national drug control and harm-reduction strategies. Its leadership played a historic role in introducing and expanding opioid agonist therapy (methadone maintenance), modernizing alcohol and tobacco cessation clinical protocols, and developing interventions for behavioral addictions such as gambling and digital media dependency. The association hosts national scientific congresses, conducts continuing medical education workshops, and publishes evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.

The Medical Model of Addiction: Moving Beyond Moral Stigma

Contemporary neuroscience demonstrates that addiction is a chronic, relapsing neurobiological disorder altering brain circuits responsible for reward processing, motivation, and executive impulse inhibition. AMA conducts continuous public and professional education to counter misconceptions that reduce chemical dependency to moral weakness or personal failure. Championing compassionate medical care and validated pharmacological options enables patients and families to approach treatment as a dignified healthcare recovery pathway.

Clinical Workforce Training and Opioid Substitution Expansion

The clinical success of national addiction strategies relies upon the expertise of frontline healthcare providers. AMA conducts structured training programs empowering primary care physicians, psychiatrists, and nursing staff in early screening, safe opioid agonist maintenance (methadone dispensation protocols), and managing co-occurring psychiatric comorbidities such as major depression and trauma syndromes. This educational outreach ensures high clinical safety and equitable care standards throughout Morocco.
