About and missions

Located within the populous Beni Makada district of Tangier, this addiction treatment facility represents a pioneering achievement of the National Addiction Control Program initiated by the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity. Historically challenged by illicit drug transit and widespread consumption, Northern Morocco required this paradigm shift, replacing marginalization with evidence-based clinical compassion and civic inclusion.

The facility operates via an integrated dual architecture uniting medical clinical care and community empowerment. The medical department, directed by Ministry of Health addictologists and psychiatrists, oversees medically managed detoxification, daily methadone distribution protocols, and concurrent psychiatric management. The community psychosocial wing, operating in close synergy with the specialized Hasnouna Association, conducts outreach work: street-based needle exchange, rapid mobile viral screening, literacy classes, vocational manual workshops, and family mediation restoring damaged household ties.

Harm Reduction and Frontline Street Outreach Strategies

Applying a pragmatic public health framework, the Beni Makada center mobilizes mobile outreach teams into marginalized urban pockets and informal gathering spots. The primary objective is preventing transmission of HIV and Hepatitis C through sterile equipment distribution and wound care, while establishing therapeutic trust. This non-judgmental outreach brings vulnerable individuals out of the shadows, preparing them to enter clinical detox and substitution therapies when ready.

Peer Educators Driving Long-Term Treatment Adherence and Hope

The center actively engages stabilized former substance users who have completed accredited training as community peer educators. Their lived experience is an invaluable clinical asset in dismantling incoming patients' mistrust, dispelling myths surrounding methadone, and embodying living proof that enduring recovery is achievable. Radiating tangible hope and resilience, peer workers significantly bolster long-term medical compliance and civic reintegration.
