Mind mapping: mapping thought to stimulate memory and creativity

A visual technique for organising thought through branches, colours and images to multiply the effectiveness of learning.

1 Tony Buzan and the brain's networked functioning

Developed in the 1970s by British psychologist Tony Buzan, the mind map, or heuristic diagram, mirrors the brain's natural neural functioning. Whereas traditional linear notes force the mind to follow a rigid, monotonous order from top to bottom, the brain thinks through branching, radiating associations around a central concept.

2 Rules for building an effective mind map

A mind map begins with a central core illustrated by an image or principal keyword. Thick main branches representing major themes radiate from this centre and subdivide into finer branches representing subsidiary ideas. Distinct bright colours for each branch, single keywords rather than long sentences, and small drawings or pictograms simultaneously stimulate the logical and creative functions of both cerebral hemispheres.

3 School, university and professional uses

Mind mapping is a superb tool for pupils and students facing substantial material to memorise: a fifty-page synthesis can be condensed onto one A4 sheet readable at a glance. It is also ideal for preparing public speaking, facilitating team brainstorming or structuring a complex writing project.

4 The place of this approach within support

This approach brings a smile back to discouraged learners, particularly visual thinkers and children with dyslexia or ADHD. It transforms the chore of revision into a stimulating game of visual exploration with lasting effectiveness.

5 Adaptability to digital tools and multisensory memory

Mind mapping works equally well with paper and felt-tip pens or interactive digital software. By combining kinaesthetic, visual and semantic memory, it anchors knowledge in long-term memory in a playful, enduring way.
