Entering and staying in employment: building a successful career despite psychological vulnerability

Individualised employment support based on the IPS model, to access fulfilling work while preserving mental health balance.

1 Work as a source of dignity and mental health

Professional activity is more than a means of financial subsistence: it is a major source of social recognition, regular daily rhythm and stronger self-esteem. Yet after prolonged sick leave for depression or burnout, or when living with stabilised mental disorders, the search for employment is often hindered by fear of judgement and stigma among recruiters.

2 The innovative approach of supported employment: the IPS model

The approach draws on the international Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model, which moves away from seemingly endless preparatory placements and prioritises a rapid search for genuine, paid employment in an ordinary workplace, matching the person’s interests and skills and accompanied by ongoing, individualised support on the job.

3 Assessing strengths and preparing for interviews

The employment adviser takes stock of the candidate’s talents and transferable skills. They prepare the person tactfully for job interviews, helping them present their background positively without being obliged to disclose their personal medical file, and identify companies committed to social responsibility and inclusion.

4 Mediating with the employer and making lasting workplace adjustments

With the employee’s agreement, the adviser liaises with the occupational physician and managers to arrange suitable working conditions, such as flexible hours, an initial part-time schedule, partial remote working or a supportive mentor. Regular follow-up during the first months ensures lasting integration that enriches both parties.

5 Sustaining employment and developing skills

Follow-up extends well beyond the signing of the employment contract: the adviser remains available to defuse possible workplace tensions and support career development, enabling the employee to flourish in their work over the long term.
